Syracuse University Archaeological Research Center
The Graduate Program
At Syracuse University, graduate study in historical archaeology is a
relatively new emphasis. Our focus is on ethnohistory, culture change and
transformation, and the impact of historical contact and interaction between
cultures. The historical archaeology emphasis within anthropology draws upon our
strengths in social and cultural anthropology as well as from Maxwell School
faculty in History and Geography. The primary area of faculty research has
centered on cultural transformations African historical sites and in
African-Caribbean slave communities. Students have the opportunity to
participate in our on-going field research in Central New
York and the Virgin Islands. Graduate research is assisted by the newly
equipped archaeology laboratory. Students are also encouraged to take advantage
of the University's excellent computing and Geographic Information Systems
facilities. Inter-disciplinary Studies.
