Linguistic anthropology is taught by
Susan S. Wadley
(Ph.D., University of Chicago, 1973) and Robert
Rubinstein (Ph.D., SUNY-Binghamton, 1977) although other faculty
work with language-related issues and discourse. In addition, students
can take sociolinguistics with Tej Bhatia, a
linguist, who also teaches courses on world englishes and language and
globalization. Several recent dissertations have had linguistic foci:
P. Chaise Ladousa (Ph.D. 1999) worked on English and Hindi medium schooling
in north India while Greg Feldman (Ph.D. 2001) analyzed the discourses around
Estonia’s language policies as they affect the assimilation of Russian
minorities into the new Estonian state.
