Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to take the GRE test?

GRE  test scores are required for all applicants. Our GRE code is 2823. This is the institution code for Syracuse University. It should be used when requesting the ETS to send your scores electronically to Syracuse University.  We will accept the GMAT in lieu of the GRE. Please note this in your application, as we must access these scores through SU's Whitman School of Management.

We evaluate all candidates based on six application elements: the personal statement; the resume/C.V.; transcripts of prior college and graduate school work; letters of recommendation; any study abroad, internship or work experience; and the GRE. For applicants who do not speak English as a first language we also require the submission of an English test score.  GRE results are never the sole basis for an admissions decision. They are useful as an indicator of academic ability, especially when considering candidates from a wide variety of academic institutions across the world. GRE scores are helpful in that it gives applicants with average or marginal academic records a second method of demonstrating academic ability.

If you take the GRE exam more than once, our Admissions Committee will consider only the highest score of each section, whether that score was earned the first or second time the test was taken. Many applicants improve in at least one section the second time they take the exam.

Please visit the website of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) at http://www.ets.org/gre for specific information about the GRE exam dates and times.

  2. What are the minimum or average GPA or GRE scores for successful applicants?

There are no minimum GPA or GRE requirements for admission. The admissions committee reviews the entire profile of an applicant through a holistic approach.  Grades and standardized test scores are taken into consideration in the context of the broader application.

MPA:         Average GPA of admitted students: 3.55
                    Median GRE scores of admitted students:  V: 570, Q: 690, A: 4.5

MA IR:      Average GPA of admitted students: 3.6.
                    Median GRE scores of admitted students:   V: 530, Q: 660; AW: 4.0.

  3. Do I have to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

An international student whose bachelors degree was not earned from an institution in which English is the language of instruction must submit proof of competency in English. A minimum of four years of college level instruction in English is required for us to waive our English testing requirement.  Competency in English can be demonstrated by taking either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. We prefer a minimum TOEFL score of 100 and a minimum IELTS of 7.0 for application.

  4. Where in the application form should I mention that I want to apply for one of the stipends available for US and EU students?

Please mention that you are applying for a stipend in your statement of interest in the Atlantis Program.

  5. Is the Atlantis Transatlantic Degree Program in International Security and Development Policy open to non-US, non-EU students?

EU students must be citizens of the European Union or third-country nationals who had been legal residents in the European Union for at least three years (and for the purpose other than study) before the start of the outgoing mobility. United States students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

If you are a non-US, non-EU citizen, you can still apply to be part of the Atlantis program but you will not be eligible to get one of the stipends available for 6 EU and 6 US students. However, you can be considered for other funding opportunities via the Maxwell program you are applying to complete in the first year at the Maxwell School – the MPA or the MAIR if you are admitted.
