Rose Corrigan, Associate Professor of Law & Politics at Drexel University, holds a joint appointment between the Department of History & Politics and the Earle Mack School of Law and is also Director of the Women's Studies Program. Her research on the intersection of social movements, feminist theory, and public policy in the area of sexual violence draws on more than ten years of experience as a service provider in agencies serving survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Her book Up Against a Wall: Rape Reform and the Failure of Success is forthcoming from New York University Press.

Rape law reform has long been hailed as one of the most successful projects of second-wave feminism. Yet forty years after the anti-rape movement emerged, Corrigan shows that feminist rape reforms have proven largely ineffective in creating and protecting rights for victims of sexual violence. But even as original reforms have been resisted, the political legacy of the anti-rape movement provides a powerful platform for policy change. In this talk, Corrigan explores how recent policy initiatives such as sexual assault nurse examiner programs, emergency contraception for rape victims, and sex offender registration laws invoke the political legacy of rape reform to prioritize the interests of criminal justice actors and resist feminist arguments about sexual violence.
