A Note from the Director, Christine L. Himes
How much does it cost to educate a child? How do pensions and savings affect the quality of later life? How do tax policies work as incentives for social behavior (and at what cost)? Unrelated questions? Not as much as they seem. Each reflects a complex issue of social policy best answered from a variety of perspectives.
In the Center for Policy Research we answer such questions by drawing on faculty and resources across the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs—a unique cross-disciplinary approach to addressing today’s most pressing policy issues.
CPR researchers apply their knowledge of economics, sociology, public administration, and public affairs to topics ranging from education and labor force issues to taxation and social welfare programs. Faculty members benefit from a shared infrastructure and the opportunity to explore similar topics across disciplines. It’s a powerful combination that government agencies and foundations turn to for cutting-edge research on complex domestic policy issues.
Our broad viewpoint is what sets the Center for Policy Research apart. The multi-faceted nature of the Maxwell School allows CPR researchers to think outside of their own disciplinary boundaries and view a topic or situation beyond their own singular vantage point. The synergy created through conferences, lectures, seminars, publications and research projects results in a multidisciplinary learning and research environment not easily found elsewhere.
