Ph.D. economists in the United States work inside and outside of academia in about equal numbers. Colleges, universities, as well as the government and the private non-academic sectors actively recruit Syracuse Ph.Ds, because most of our graduates have substantial research and teaching experience in addition to being well-prepared professional economists. In addition, our faculty have substantial experience working inside and outside academia and have placed our graduates very successfully in whatever positions they seek.

A large number of economics Ph.D. recipients from Syracuse choose academic positions. Our recent graduates have chosen positions at City University of New York, Clark University, Cornell University, East Carolina University, Florida State University, Georgia State University, Le Moyne College, the Naval Academy, Niagara University, University of Connecticut, University of British Columbia, Rochester Institute of Technology, Trinity College, University of Miami, University of Dayton, University of Rhode Island, University of Tennessee, University of West Virginia, and Utica College. Students have also received job offers from Skidmore College, Colby College, Kent State University, and a significant number of other colleges and universities.

Some of our graduates have chosen positions in federal agencies, such as the Office of Management and Budget, General Accounting Office, Joint Committee on Taxation, Federal Reserve Banks, Department of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration and Department Treasury. Other graduate students work in international development organizations including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. A few graduates have preferred positions in private sector and work at Peat-Marwick, Abt Associates, and AT&T Laboratories.
