Program of Distinction in Economics |
A total of 18 credits are required
for a minor in economics. The 18 credits are distributed among
economic principles (three to six credits), intermediate theory
(six credits), and six to nine credits of economics electives at
the 300, 400 or 500 levels, except 301, 311, 302, 470, and 490.
There are two plans of study. Students who have taken three credits of economic principles
(ECN 203) will take ECN 301, ECN 302 and nine credits of upper-division economics courses. Students
who have taken six credits of economic principles (ECN 101 and
102) or an equivalent sequence will take ECN 301, ECN 302 and
six credits of upper-division economics courses.
ECN 311 (Intermediate Mathematical Microeconomics) may be taken instead of ECN 301. ECN 311 is recommended for all the students with good analytical abilities
and appropriate mathematical preparation, and especially for students contemplating Graduate school in business, economics, or public policy.
Management students minoring in economics may
use FIN 355 toward the economics minor, but will then not also
receive credit for ECN481toward the minor. Students may not
receive credit toward the minor for both FIN 355 and ECN 481; or
for both ECN 365 and ECN 465. At least 15 of the 18 credits for the minor must be Syracuse University letter-graded course work (Academic Rules and Regulations). For example, students transferring in credit for ECN 101/102 must take an additional elective to complete the minor in order to meet the 15 credit hour rule.
Acceptance of courses other than
those listed below requires approval of a petition.
Minor Plans
Students interested in pursuing a minor in economics should go to the Economics Department office to fill out a petition. The petition should include minor courses already taken, as well as those anticipated in future semesters to complete the minor.
