Debating and Celebrating Indian Arrival Day in Trinidad and St. Vincent: From the ships Fatal Razak and Travencore to “Port Royal’s” Black Pearl

The politics of representing the arrival of indentured servants to Caribbean colonies in the aftermath of abolishing slavery has been especially thorny in the context of the celebration of Indian Arrival Day, which, in the countries of Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has become a national holiday. This lecture examines some of the tensions that have arisen in the history of campaigning for national recognition of the holiday and also in celebrations of arrivals.
