Leaders for Democracy Fellows Return to Maxwell
For the third consecutive year, the Maxwell School will host a group of
emerging leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa for five
weeks, beginning March 15.
The Leaders for Democracy Fellows Program,
sponsored by the U.S. State Department, is designed to strengthen
participants’ leadership skills, broaden their understanding of the
world, and position them to become successful innovators and champions
of democratic reforms in their countries.
While in Syracuse, program
participants will attend workshops, lectures, and discussions,
ultimately gaining a comprehensive understanding of democratic values,
conflict management, and the role of civil society within democratic
systems of government.
Following their five weeks at Maxwell, Fellows
will pursue internships with organizations in Washington, DC, related to
their fields of interest. This year’s 21 Fellows come from 14 countries:
Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Yemen.
The 11 women and 10 men work in
diverse professional field, including law, journalism, government,
non-governmental organizations, academia, business, and public
relations.
The LDF program is run by Maxwell’s Executive Education
program, with contributions from SU’s Middle East Studies Program, the
Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs, and the Program on the Analysis
and Resolution of Conflicts.
