Winner of the Myers Prize for 1988. (The Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in the United States offers an annual award for the best scholarship on the subject of intolerance in the United States. The Party of Fear shared the award for 1988 with Taylor Branch's Parting the Waters).

Named Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher for 1988-89 by the College of Arts and Sciences (Syracuse University).
