             Raymie Hudson

About Raymie:
Hello, my name is Raymie Hudson and I will be graduating from the undergraduate geography program this year—at long last! I began studying at Syracuse as a part-time student to explore what it was I would like to focus on.  Beginning school I knew I was drawn to issues of the environment, I even explored courses at ESF (the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry) such as Ecology and Nature and Popular Culture.  But as I was selecting my classes each semester based on the titles of courses, I was finding that most of the classes that interested me were falling under the GEO heading. Thus my love for geography was born by chance!

Throughout the years I have become more consumed by a passion for all things ‘food’.   Food is an often over-looked geographical issue.  But I believe it is a prime example of all the things the geography discipline encompasses and addresses.  Food is what keeps every person on this planet alive, thus the growing and distributing of food is a vital component of life on earth.  There are many unique spatial issues involved in agriculture (transportation, equitable distribution, economies, national boundaries), as well as environmental issues (agricultural production processes, food safety, genetic engineering of food), and cultural aspects (cultural and religious appropriate foods, regional diets, celebratory foods.)  Food is most definitely a geographical issue and is a pressing matter in our global world today.  Food is never just what sets on the dinner table; this is only the end product of many complex processes.

My passion for food politics has led me to explore further education in the field. I am beginning the process of graduate school applications and am looking into a few schools in California (an agricultural powerhouse!)  I hope to find a school where I can expand my understanding of food in the world today.

In addition to my love for studying food, I love to eat it, cook it, and grow it! (Like I said, I love all things ‘food’.)  I cook and bake frequently and I have a small garden when the weather permits.  I am moving to Wilmington, North Carolina in January where the weather will be much more hospitable for a garden.  So, thanks to the supportive geography department, I am now working on turning a passion into a career!
