This seminar will focus on real world policy issues currently affecting Latin American and the US.  We will look at overall US policy for the region (is there one?) and its impact; the emergence of the so-called "new Left" in Latin America and the meaning for the region and the US; the role of trade policy and specific initiatives like CAFTA and the FTAA; and we will treat both country and "functional" issues -- for example, where is Cuba headed, Venezuela and Chavez, the special case of Colombia, transnational crime, particularly narcotrafficking, instability in the Andean sub-region; the special case of Chile, Brazil as aspiring regional leader, etc.  The one-week seminar in Washington, DC will include presentations and panel discussions by practitioners in the field and involve considerable student interaction.  There will be introductory classes held in February in Syracuse, at which students will receive the course syllabus, including reading requirements.
