Spring 2009 Program Application

The Maxwell in Washington program is selective, and admission is determined by a thorough review of candidates by the Director of the program, Professor Michael Schneider.  The application includes:

  • Application form
  • Resume
  • Academic recommendation

The three central criteria for admission to the Maxwell in Washington program are academic performance, potential for successful participation, and motivation.  Please respond to the program information questions carefully with these criteria in mind.

Application Instructions:

  • The application form is available online at the URL below.  The application is a writeable .pdf file which will allow you to type your responses directly into the form.  The form CANNOT be saved unless you have Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional.  It is NOT necessary to save the form as long as you complete and submit the form before you close your web browser.  As long as your web browser remains open, you will be able to make changes to the form without saving it.  Note that some students have expressed difficulty completing this form using a Mac.  Therefore, we recommend that you use a PC to complete the form.
  • Once you have completed all information requested in the form, you will be asked to submit the form both in paper and electronically.  Use the buttons on the form to print out two copies of your completed form.  Sign one copy of the printed form and submit it to the Global Programs Coordinator by the application deadline, Friday, October 3, 2008.  You can drop off the application form to the International Relations Program offices in 225 Eggers Hall, or you can mail the form to the Global Programs Coordinator at the following address: 225 Eggers Hall, Syracuse, NY 13224-1020.
Save the other printed copy for your files.
  • To submit the data entered in the form electronically, use the button on the form to email the data to the Global Programs Coordinator at global@maxwell.syr.edu.  It is not necessary to sign this electronic version.  A box should appear that allows you to select the email application you wish to use to send this information: Desktop Email Application (e.g. Outlook), Internet Email, or Other.  The program will create a data file with an .xml extension that you will need to attach to the email message.  If you choose "Desktop Email Application" the file will be given to your default email application (it should create a new message with the data file attached).  If you choose "Internet Email" or "Other" it will ask you to save the data file to a place where you can access it, and then you will compose an email message in your internet email or other application and attach the data file to the message.  Please do not email me the text in the file itself; please attach the data file to your message.  If you have any trouble emailing the form please contact the Global Programs Coordinator directly.  Note that the data file is not the application as you see it.  Don't worry.  We will be able to import this data back into the form itself so it is a proper format.
  • In addition to the printed and emailed copy of the application form, students are required to email an updated version of their resume to the Global Programs Coordinator at global@maxwell.syr.edu.
  • Finally, all applicants are required to have a faculty member with whom they have taken a course submit an academic recommendation on their behalf.  Please select someone who is familiar with your academic work and plan of study, and who is willing to complete the academic recommendation form for your application to this program.  Do not ask your academic advisor or other individual unless they were an instructor for a course you took.  You will need to identify this person in the application form.  You will also need to complete the top of the recommendation form and submit this form to your recommender to complete.  Please be courteous and give them enough time to complete the recommendation form and return it to the Global Programs Coordinator by the application deadline (you should give this form to your recommender by September 15th to given them a couple of weeks to complete this).
