Washington Undergraduate Semester:
Program Costs

The cost for attending the Maxwell in Washington Semester Program includes a $400 administrative fee, your tuition, a program fee for housing, a $100 housing deposit (we reduce your program housing fee by this amount), and your own personal expenses.

Any Federal, State, Private or Institutional Financial Aid you receive can be applied towards the cost (this includes federal work study, if you are selected for the one work study position available on this program).

If you choose to be housed in the program housing at the Calvert House, the fee is $2,900 per person, for the whole semester. If you choose to live elsewhere, those costs vary. If you choose to pursue your own housing in the DC region, you are *well-advised* to verify its suitability and its location (proximity to metro, etc.) BEFORE you move in or sign a lease. Our two housing assistants have their program fees reduced by one-third.

Parking is available at an additional fee of $125 per month. We have limited space, however, and ask that those interested note their vehicle information on the application form. We will offer parking to those winning a lottery if the number of people in need is greater than the number of parking spaces.

When planning your budget for personal expenses please remember that Washington is an exciting yet expensive city; the average movie ticket, burger or cab ride will be slightly higher than in Syracuse.

The table below will give you an idea of what the costs of the semester are likely to be; these costs do not include any financial aid you might receive. We offer a limited number of small scholarships, two housing manager team positions, a work study position, and one parking place. We make these decisions based on the applications we receive for the semester in question.

Here is a preliminary estimate of costs based upon the 2008-2009 tuition rates and fees. Please note that costs are subject to change:

Fees:
          Housing Deposit..........................................................$100.00
          Administrative Fee.......................................................$400.00
Program Fee for Housing - Deposit................................$2,800.00
          Total Program Fees................................................... $3,300.00
Tuition:                                                                                                       +
           Undergraduate tuition for one semester........................$16,090.00
Total:                                                                                                          =
Total Cost of Program Payable to SU.........................$19,390.00

Please note that while students will not be located on Syracuse University's campus and, therefore, will not benefit from services provided to students on campus, there are a variety of fees that will be waived for student's participating in the program in Washington.  These fee waivers are described below:

Health Services Fee........................................$261.00 waived
Co-curricular Fee.............................................$85.00 waived*

*Note that the Co-curricular fee is charged in the fall for the whole academic year.  The full fee is $170, but students that are off-campus for one semester will be credited half of this fee, or $85.

Once students have registered for the Maxwell in Washington courses, the Global Programs Coordinator will request that these fees be waived for each student participant.  Please note that it is not possible to waive the student activity fee of $84/semester.  The current policy does not allow the waiver of this fee under any circumstances.
