Dual IR / JD Option
Students enrolled in
the joint JD/IR degree program (starting in fall 2006) must earn a total
minimum of 100 credits in both the Maxwell School and the College of
Law. The Masters in International Relations requires 40 credits, 28 of
which will be from the core Maxwell IR courses and 12 of which may be
earned by course work at the College of Law. To apply a course taken in
the College of Law to the M.A. in International Relations at the Maxwell
School, the law course must deal with some aspect of international
affairs, and the grade must be at least a "B." Examples of such courses
include:
• International
Law
• International Business Transactions
• Comparative Law
• International Organizations
• Conflict of Laws
• Humanitarian Law
The JD requires 87
credits. Joint-degree students must take at least 72 Law School credits.
Students will be allowed to transfer 24 credits from the Graduate School
to the College of Law, and these credits will be calculated as 15. The
first six credits of the 24 will be counted as 1 credit. The remaining
18 credits will reconfigured as 9 credits for Law School purposes (9 + 6
= 15) These 15 credits added to 72 law credits will equal the 87 credits
required for the JD.
You can apply to the
JD/MA joint degree program at two points. (1) Apply simultaneously,
before entering either program. Submit LSAT scores to the College of Law
and GRE scores to the Graduate School in separate applications. (2)
Apply towards the end of the fall semester of study at the College of
Law. Students already matriculated at the College of Law should consult
with Jo Ann Larkin, Registrar, College of Law, Room 444, Ext. 2036.
Those thinking about pursuing the joint degree will find helpful the
informational meeting organized each fall. The mechanics of the
"internal application" are very simple: you resubmit certain portions of
the Law School's application materials to the International Relations
Program directly. In this case, you should supplement the Law School's
materials with a current statement of purpose and at least one
recommendation from a current professor. For the "internal application"
only, GRE scores are not required.
The joint degree can
be completed in the same time frame as the JD separately.

Please Note:
Distribution of law credits during a fall/spring semester are subject to
change.
An asterisk (*)
indicates that three law credits can be counted toward the M.A. in
International Relations. Three such courses must be in a schedule, but
they may be taken in any semester. To the schedule above must be added,
perhaps in a summer session, three additional credits from the Maxwell
School. Either the Geneva or Washington internship programs would
fulfill these credits. The Geneva and Washington internship programs
carry six credits. However, any combination of courses and internships
may be used towards the 12 transferable credits.
Students in the
JD/MA program should not try to take too many courses at one time.
Usually, students at the College of Law register for 15+ credits. In
the Maxwell School, students register for 9-12 credits. Each represents
full-time commitment. Thus, work in the average Maxwell course can be
expected to demand somewhat more time than does the average law course.
For instance, attempting three Maxwell courses and three law courses
simultaneously will almost certainly result in a substandard level of
performance.
