IR Staff welcome
IR Team / Maxwell
introduction
The IR office team would like to welcome you to the
Maxwell School and Syracuse University. We are working hard this summer to
ensure you will have a smooth and enjoyable transition to life on campus and in
Central New York. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our family!
If you scroll down towards the bottom of the page, you will find video clips of
the campus - a must see for first-timers to SU! But now for
introductions...
Ambassador Donald Planty is the Chair
of the IR Program and Professor of Practice in International Relations
here at the Maxwell School.
He is the newest member of the IR Staff Team, beginning his role as Program
Chair in fall 2008. In addition to his distinguished
career with the Department of State and a successful strategic consulting
practice, he also maintains a farm about an
hour and a half north of Syracuse. If not at Maxwell, you might find him
this winter driving north through significant snow drifts on his way back home.
We look forward to working with him here in 225 Eggers and know that he will
greatly contribute to the future success of the IR Program.
Samantha Clemence
is our Global Programs Coordinator. She will play an integral role
in your program here, offering you invaluable advice on off-campus study and
internship opportunities.
A native of planet Earth (or so she tells us) who resides on a geological formation known as a drumlin (ask
her about it sometime for a good laugh), Samantha came to us after many years in
Texas, where she sported a ten-gallon hat, drove a pick-up, and was a frequent
spectator at the local rodeo. She has a BA in English Literature from
Hollins College and has significant experience in the world of international
publishing. Samantha is currently completing a graduate degree in Forest
and Natural Resource Management at the State University of New York College of
Environmental Science and Forestry. After finishing her degree, she hopes
to finally be able to see the forest for the trees. Samantha is one of the newest
members of our team, yet has somehow mysteriously managed to secure the best
parking spot (pushing and shoving her way to the top already).
Francine D'Amico
is the Undergraduate Director of the IR Program and Associate Professor of
Political Science. She is a
PhD graduate of Cornell University's Government Program and has research interests spanning from gender studies and
feminist IR to Latin America. In a former life, she spent time conducting research in
Nicaragua and Cuba. She can normally be found cruising with her new, red
Bavarian automobile at
lightning speeds down Route
90 from her beautiful home on the lake in Geneva (no, not Switzerland) to Syracuse.
Janis Gray
is the Admissions Coordinator and Graduate Student Records Coordinator here in the IR Office.
She is originally from Central New York and graduated with a BA
in Psychology and English from none other than Syracuse University.
This coming year will be Janis' 29th year at the University, and she can expound
on University trivia like no one else. She is the first face
you will see when you walk into the office, always ready to greet you with a
warm and welcome smile. You will likely remember Janis from the poetically wacky emails she
writes to the listserv and the hysterical anecdotes she recounts during the end
of the year awards ceremony.
Deanna Phillips
is the Assistant Director of the IR Program, in charge of everything from
the budget to general office administration to alumni relations.
Originally from the Bronx (and darn proud of it), she still speaks with that
familiar New York
edge. She has lived in Syracuse for a long time and has worked at the
University for close to 20 years. In fact, she was the first official IR
staff member, starting the program with Matt many moons ago. She has been
referred to as the "soul" of IR, and indeed, once you arrive, you will soon
learn why. She loves to laugh and has the warmest heart of most anyone
you'll encounter. Watch out - her sense of humor and outlook on life are
contagious (if occasionally irreverent).
Denise Sokolic
is the Undergraduate Student Recorder and Office Coordinator.
Denise is a native Syracusan and has been working at the University for 15
years. She is the second face
you
will see when you walk into the office (or the first, based upon your angle).
Denise likes driving fancy sports cars at excessively low speeds and is renowned
for drinking more cans of Pepsi in a given 24-hour period than the company can
safely manufacture. When not working tirelessly to ensure the office is
running smoothly and with optimum efficiency, she can sometimes be found with
Deanna trying to one-up the slot machines in the Casino. Denise joined the
IR team just two short years ago, and she continues to ably bring the office
enough humor to last us through the cold Syracuse winters.
Ryan Williams
is the Associate Director of Graduate Studies. You will interact
with him mainly as your academic advisor. Ryan is from a small town near
Rochester, NY. He completed his BA in German, French, and International
Business at Nazareth C ollege
as well as a masters degree in international affairs from Tufts University's
Fletcher School and an MBA from the HEC School of Management in Paris. He
is currently a PhD candidate in political science here at Maxwell. Before
joining the IR team, Ryan worked both in Europe and in the US in mergers and
acquisitions and management consulting. If not helping a student in his
office, you might find Ryan poking fun at his colleagues or trying to catch up
on his sleep (he has a 2-year old son).
