Alumni Profiles:
Andrew
Parsons,
Class of 2005
Andrew Parsons graduated from Syracuse University in May of 2005. He studied
Latin American human rights as an International Relations and Spanish major with
a minor in Latin American Studies. Andrew tailored his major throughout most of
his years at Syracuse to study the US government's policy and influence in the
ongoing conflict in Colombia. He graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa
and as a Remembrance Scholar. On campus Andrew co-managed and volunteered for
the Art Reach service project as well as holding positions of Vice-President and
President of Shaw Hall Council. Andrew spent a total of three semesters abroad
and did not cease slow down his involvement during those semesters. He
volunteered helping the homeless through Solidarios Para El Desarrollo while
studying abroad in Madrid, worked for the Azuay Office of Human Rights while
studying abroad in Ecuador and interned at the Washington Office of Human Rights
while studying in Washington, DC. Upon graduation, Andrew worked as a
recuitment fellow for Teach For America while deferring his time in the Teach
For America corps. He is currently a first year Teach For America corps member
and works as a 1st grade teacher at Achievement First East New York Charter
School in Brooklyn, New York. He has relentless pushed his students to achieve
more and recently started a free guitar program at his school after receiving a
grant for it.
Teaching in Brooklyn, New York through Teach For America has given me
opportunities to use the skills that I've gained during my semesters abroad at
SU in many ways that I never considered. I've been given the opportunity to
humbly come into a new community, learn about and experience a new culture and
environment and use that knowledge to make real, quantifiable change. This year,
I've worked to give Shaiquan the confidence to make his own choices about his
behavior and choose to work hard to overcome the massive obstacles in his life.
Spending two years to learn how to overcome social inequalities in a broken
educational system and put my students on grade level, will prepare me to expand
my knowledge back to IR or any other field. I firmly believe that the education
you receive should not be determined by your zip code. That' s why I Teach For
America.
