International Relations Scholar of the Year
The
International Relations “Scholar of the
Year” Award is presented annually to
a graduating senior for academic excellence in International Relations
and in the difficulty of the curriculum chosen.
Sarah
R. Dickens

This year’s recipient was Sarah R. Dickens, whose
cumulative GPA was 4.0 and who completed an honors thesis on the Al
Qaeda terrorist network together with a second major in French Language,
Literature, and Culture. Sarah spent a semester at our study abroad
center in Strasbourg, France, and also studied both Hebrew and Arabic.
She was named a Syracuse University Scholar and graduated summa cum
laude.
Goodwin Cooke Award for Leadership
in International Relations
The
Award for Leadership in International
Relations is given annually to a graduating senior who has exhibited
leadership in the activities of the International Relations Program.
This award has now been named the
Goodwin Cooke Leadership Award to honor the
many dedicated years of leadership exhibited by Ambassador and
Professor-of-Practice Goodwin Cooke, who served as Director of
Undergraduate Studies in International Relations at Syracuse University
for 17 years, following a distinguished career as a US foreign service
officer.
Afroviti Guta

This year’s recipient
is Afroviti Guta, who served
as head delegate for our Model United Nations team in 2005-2006 and was
a member of the delegation in past years. Afroviti minored in both
Philosophy and Spanish and hopes to pursue a career in international law
and diplomacy.
Harlan Cleveland Award for
Excellence in International Policy Issues
The
Harlan Cleveland Award
for Excellence in International Policy
Issues is given annually to a graduating senior for academic achievement
and enthusiastic involvement in international policy issues which Harlan
Cleveland’s career represented. Dr. Cleveland was Dean of the Maxwell
School of Citizenship & Public Affairs and formerly US Assistant
Secretary of State and US Ambassador to NATO.
Sarah
Hope Auerbach

This year’s recipient
is Sarah Hope Auerbach, who
participated in our Maxwell-in-Washington International Relations
semester, where she interned at the US State Departments Office of
International Women’s Issues, and also studied abroad in Ecuador, where
she interned at the Cotacachi Municipal Office of Social and Economic
Development. Sarah combined triple majors in International Relations,
History, and Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture.
Julian R. Friedman Award
The
Julian R. Friedman Award
is given annually to a graduating senior for outstanding academic
achievement, community involvement, and a commitment to the spirit of
international which Professor Friedman’s life represented. Professor
Friedman taught in the Political Science Department at the Maxwell
School and was active with human rights organizations, including the
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Emily
Chase Williams

This year’s
recipient is Emily Chase
Williams, who studied abroad in both Strasbourg, France, where she
interned at the Council of Europe, and Madrid, Spain. She interned
locally at the Refugee Resettlement Program of the Inter-Religious
Council of Central New York in Spring 2004 and again in Fall 2005.
Emily has combined her major in International Relations with a major in
Spanish and a minor in Women Studies and was named a Chancellor’s
Scholar and a Merit Scholar.
