International Relations Scholar of the Year
Melissa Emm
This year’s
recipient is Melissa Emm. Melissa combined her major in International
Relations with a major in Italian Language, Literature, and Culture; she
has also studied Spanish and Portuguese and is truly an international
linguist, and she studied in our SU Abroad Center in Florence,
Italy. She
has interned at the International Center of Syracuse and worked as a
tutor for English and science students during the summer months.
She is a recipient of both a Syracuse University Founder’s
scholarship and a Syracuse University Dean’s scholarship.
Melissa has a cumulative grade point average of 3.982 and a GPA
for courses in the International Relations major of 4.000, and she has
been accepted for fall admission to Cornell University Law
School.

Erin M. McFarland
This year’s
recipient is Erin McFarland, a Chancellor’s Scholar and a Merit Scholar
and has combined her major in International Relations with a major in
Economics and a minor in Spanish Language, Literature, & Linguistics.
She participated in our
Maxwell-in-Washington International Relations Semester where she
interned at the Washington Office on Latin America and she also studied
abroad in Madrid, Spain
and has completed the Renee Crown Honors Program.
She was a member
of our 2005 delegation to the National Model United Nations conference
portraying Nicaragua,
and she served as Head Delegate for our 2007 delegation to the National
Model United Nations conference portraying the Republic of Guinea.
She has a cumulative GPA of 3.811 and has been named to both Phi
Beta Kappa and Sigma Iota Rho honor societies.

Erin
Kathleen Vannella
This year’s recipient, Erin Vannella,
has combined her major in International Relations with a major in
Broadcast Journalism in the Newhouse School of Communications.
Her geographic concentration is Asia
and her topic concentration is International Security & Diplomacy, and
she has a cumulative GPA of 3.870 and a GPA for courses in her IR major
of 3.881. She studied abroad
in London and in our Maxwell-in-Washington
International Relations semester. Our DC center director, Dr. Michael
Schneider, writes that her contribution to the Global Policy Seminar was
original and outstanding.
Julian R. Friedman Award
Sarah
Anne Ryman
This year’s recipient is Sarah Anne
Ryman. Sarah has a triple major in International Relations, Geography,
and Spanish Language, Literature, & Linguistics.
She volunteered with the Refugee Resettlement Program in Central
New York and continued her work with immigrants during her semester
abroad in Ecuador
while interning at Movilidad
Humana. She has been
named a Remembrance Scholar and has completed the Renee Crown University
Honors Program and received the Honors Program Crown Award.
She also interned at the US State
Department in our Maxwell-in-Washington International Relations
Semester. She has been named
to both the Phi Beta Kappa and the Sigma Iota Rho honor societies and
has a cumulative GPA of 3.968 and a GPA for courses in her IR major of
4.000. She will be pursuing
a Master’s Degree in Geography at the
University
of Toronto.
