About Sister-L
SISTER-L is an international electronic discussion group focusing on the history and contemporary concerns of women religious (sisters and nuns). Founded in July 1994, it now has about 900 subscribers throughout the world.
SISTER-L is about building community, so its agenda is far from fixed. However, some of the topics it has considered include:
- future directions for religious life
- the theology, spirituality, and ecclesiology of religious life
- responses to Vatican statements/policies directed to women's religious communities
- actions taken by Sisters' Councils, associations, federations, and other groups focused on the interests of women religious
- lecturers available for community assemblies and programs
- ideas for liturgies suitable for community gatherings
- women's spirituality & theology; changing roles of women in the church
- social justice concerns, especially those affecting women; ecumenism & interfaith developments
- discussion of one's own new and ongoing research on the history and contemporary dimensions of religious life
- general discussion of bibliography, methodology and theory relevant to the study of sisters and religious life
- announcement of new research on history and concerns of women religious
- inquiries about specific information available in community, diocesan, university, and other archives
Sisters, scholars and others interested in these and similar topics are invited to subscribe. We emphasize that one need not be Catholic, or a member of a religious congregation, to participate! In fact, the only persons not welcome are those whose purpose is to bash or ridicule sisters or religious life. It is assumed that accepted standards of serious and respectful discourse will prevail on this list (although SISTER-L is unmoderated, anyone who disregards these standards runs the risk of being unsubscribed).
