Type of Activity: Lecture

Summary: The presentation shall compare the experience of a non government organization, government department and a private agency implementing a similar micro credit program in three respective states in south India. As part of his dissertation project, he recently concluded field research in 3 villages from each state, located where their borders converge. The villages share a similar socioeconomic background making it easier to isolate extraneous influences over the beneficiaries. The presentation will identify who is targeted to create micro credit groups, how benefits of group membership are distributed, and who is beholden for the groups’ sustenance, and then examine why differences have emerged. It will conclude by identifying characteristics of institutions that matter in alleviating poverty.
