Pakistan

Type
of Activity: Speaker
Speaking: Nosheen
Ali, Stanford University
Summary:
This talk will examine the aesthetics
and politics of nature in the constitution of state and
region in Pakistan. Ali examines how the strategic, border
region of the Northern Areas has been constructed and
contained through nationalist discourses of scenic
landscapes as well as state practices of biodiversity
conservation. Both processes have served to deny regional
identity and rights, while entrenching state power as well
as a neoliberal commodification of nature in the Northern
Areas. She will also discuss the limits and possibilities of
contesting such processes of rule through locally grounded
ecological imaginings and interventions.
