FULBRIGHT APPLICATIONS TO IIE (DUE SEPT. 20 at the Moynihan Institute, 3RD FLOOR MAXWELL)

You need a two page (absolute maximum) single-spaced proposal: what you want to do, where, with what organization and persons, why. This is the most crucial piece and requires that you have investigated schools, faculty, teachers, internships, or whatever before you can write it. It must be precise and clear about what you plan to do. You should work with faculty in your field on defining your project and sorting out where to go, why, etc. I can help with writing the proposal, but you must do the legwork to develop the idea. (You will paste this statement into the on-line application: see below.)

We will have workshops in the first weeks of the fall to work on these.

You will need three letters of reference and one language reference if going to a non-English speaking country that requires language skills (not all non-English countries expect you to have previous language skills). You should have at least a draft of your essay written before you ask for letters of reference so that your referees know what you are intending to do and can comment appropriately.

You need a one page (absolute maximum) single-spaced biographical essay: show in a creative fashion why your life has set you up to be the perfect person for this project at this time! Use your creative writing skills here. Make it compelling and interesting.

If you have these two drafts by the time you get to campus, you should be in good shape. As I said we’ll have workshops [bring your drafts] in the first weeks of classes.

You will need transcripts (one each) of all colleges and universities that you have attended. You can start ordering these

The IIE Fulbright Program has created a downloadable application off the WEB. However, you MUST consult with your Campus Fulbright Advisor (Susan S. Wadley, 343 Eggers, or sswadley@maxwell.syr.edu) in order to obtain access to this application.

When you contact Professor Wadley, as your Campus Fulbright Advisor, she will add you to the IIE Fulbright Application Homepage. Once that is done, you will receive an email informing you of your user ID and password. You need to send Professor Wadley a copy of that message.

You may set up your account and then access the application at:
http://fulbright.embark.com

Professor Wadley has access to your application as you work on it. After your campus interview (where revisions may be requested), you must hit the submit button so that she can make a final review and send the application to IIE in NYC.

Make sure that you SIGN the hard copy of your application.

You will submit two hard copies of your application to Professor Wadley by Sept. 20 at the Moynihan Institute, 3rd floor, Eggers. Include all letters of reference and transcripts (in sealed envelopes), two printed copies of the application, and a portfolio if required in ONE large manila envelope. You are responsible for obtaining and submitting all of these materials by the due date. Do NOT have letters of reference and transcripts mailed separately to Professor Wadley. You are responsible for obtaining these and submitting them at one time with your application. Please get your draft proposal and requests for letters to your faculty and other referees in time to easily meet the deadline.

Once you have submitted the application to Global Affairs, you will be contacted by two members of the Campus Fulbright Committee for an interview. Please make arrangements to meet with them at their convenience. This is a 30-45 minute interview that will explore your knowledge of the country and your ability to do what you proposed.

The first round of decisions is made by Jan. 30. If you are named a finalist at that time, you may not heard about the final determination until May or even June.
