Syracuse University Center for European Studies Wins ‘National Resource Center’ Designation, Grant
The Syracuse University Center for European Studies (CES), in consortium with Cornell University’s Institute for European Studies, has again been designated a Title VI National Resource Center by the U.S. Department of Education and received funding through 2010 for programs that enrich research and study on Europe at SU. The Center, directed by Associate Professor of Political Science Mitchell A. Orenstein, is housed in the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at the Maxwell School.
This prestigious award will fund numerous center events, conferences, speakers, fellowship competitions, and community outreach activities over a four-year period from 2006 to 2010. In addition, the award will facilitate a partnership between CES and the College of Arts and Sciences to teach some of the less-commonly taught European languages at Syracuse, including Polish, Turkish, and Portuguese -- the latter will be offered at the intermediate level for the first time this year.
Earlier this spring, CES was awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grant, also by US/ED, that supports graduate student fellowships in European studies. In combination, these two grants encourage the study of European languages, cultures, and societies, providing a forum for dialogue among students, scholars, and community members in upstate New York. Syracuse University Center for European Studies works closely with its partner institutions, Cornell University Institute for European Studies and Maxwell European Union Center of Excellence, in pursuing this mission.
