Our many years of experience and long-standing relationship within the Florentine community have allowed us to offer students a program that excels in academics and cultural immersion. At the same time, SUF is in a continuous process of self-renewal, and is a pioneer in community engagement initiatives. Summer in Florence:  Course Announcement
Niccolo Machiavelli: His Florentine Context and His Contemporary Significance
(PHI/PSC 300, 3 credits, undergraduate)  May 27-July 10, 2010

Delve into the political philosophy of Florence's most famous citizen, identifying the formative influences on his thought processes (including his rejection of the classical account of political virtues) and assessing its continuing significance. You'll become acquainted with some of the basic ideas in Machiavelli's work and the wider debates in political philosophy in which those have played a role.

The academic palette covers a breadth of fields taught in both Spanish and English: Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Management and International Business, Spanish Language and Literature, and Women's Studies. Advanced Spanish language students may also take courses at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. Course-related field study brings you to Roman ruins, medieval villages, subterranean caves, and the majestic mountains of the north-while your Spanish home-stay will further deepen your personal and academic experience. You can even gain valuable professional experience with one of our many internship opportunities.

Our academic program builds on the city's unique institutional resources. Over 1/3 of our faculty are professionals from the Council of Europe or Court of Human Rights who bring real issues into the classroom. Niche programs in Strasbourg include: EU Studies, International Relations, French Language, Human Rights, Music Performance (partnership with Strasbourg Conservatory), and Management. The Syracuse Center is within walking distance of the Council of Europe and the Court of Human Rights, and qualified students may intern or research at one of the Council directorates. Extensive field study to Central and Eastern Europe and historically significant Western cities gives you first-hand experience of the complex cultural and political identity of the New Europe.
