PLACA Graduate Student Working Groups
The Caribbean Working Group
The Caribbean Working Group is a student-based organization that was started at Syracuse University in 2004. As a member within the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA), The Caribbean Working Group’s mission includes:
The creation of discussions and lectures centered on current events and historical epochs that have shaped, and continue shaping, the countries within the Caribbean Region.
- To place focus on the experiences of inhabitants of the islands of the Caribbean, specifically the ways in which histories of colonialism, enslavement, and imperialism, affect this particular demographics’ livelihood, and also contribute to flawed paradigms/perceptions of the Caribbean, both by the inhabitants themselves and those of other countries and regions.
- To host cultural activities which highlight the diversity, historical and cultural significance of the Caribbean Region.
The group’s membership comprises of graduate students at both the Master’s and PhD level, faculty whose work and political interests are centered around issues affecting the region, as well as interested members who may not necessarily originate from or have academic interest in the Caribbean region, but still have genuine interests in learning more about it.
