At its inaugural reception on September 25, 2003, the CES distributed a survey to determine interest among the campus’ Europeanist community to help us organize our events and planning for the near term. By the end of the first quarter of the Center's formation, we established a "Vanguard" of supportive growth of our endeavors in the Syracuse Community.
We are pleased to report that the following people have agreed to be members of the committees as listed below:
CES Faculty Council and Curriculum Committee
Beverly Allen, of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics (Italian)
Tej Bhatia, of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics
Gifford Miles, of the Army Reserved Officers Training Corps Program
Mitchell Orenstein, of the Political Science Department, and Director, CES
Marina Chegrinets
CES Library Acquisitions Committee
Michael Pasqualoni, Reference Librarian for Public Administration, International Relations, Political Science, and Economics
CES Outreach Committee (e.g., Across European Studies, and into the regional community)
Luna Corbetta, graduate student, Public Administration
Marina Chegrinets
Jonathan Turbin, International Relations
Larissa Davis, International Relations
Six other initiatives came to the surface through these surveys, which leads us as a Center to create ways to respond to the following interests:
A. European Identity and the Media
B. Research collaboration for those interested in the EU
C. Service activities for those areas/institutions in need (such as refugee communities from Bosnia, etc)
D. A curriculum development proposal: global communication and world Englishes
E. An offer of help to draft practical vision statements to prioritize decision-making about new library acquisitions in European Studies
F. Generation of a resource base for European Studies, and how to pursue opportunities
These committees will grow in importance along with our Center, and especially as we work toward particular projects such as the formation of a major in European Studies, outreach initiatives, library acquisitions, and other projects. If you would like to join our network, or serve on one of these committees attached to the Center for European Studies, please send an email to ces@maxwell.syr.edu and we would welcome your involvement.
