The 2003-2004 Team of graduate assistants here at both the Center for European Studies and the European Union Center developed this list of issues they deem important to consider in the current or near-future European Affairs.

These issues fall into three broad categories: (a) “catching up with the European Union,” denoting challenges to new members of the Union, or those in the accessionist category; (b) “contesting global governance,” a series of issues where the European Union as a whole acts in concert relative to other bodies such as the WTO or UN; and (c) “the new face of Europe,” a series of issues which draw attention toward the implications of demographic change as Europe grows in importance, institutionalizes in the European Union, and meets challenges of multiculturalism and pluralism. For further information, please view the links below.

As the graduate assistants develop these issues in their writing and research, each will be hotlinked to a short essay as an exposition of the issue’s significance to European Affairs. We invite others to submit similar short items, at ces@maxwell.syr.edu.
