Syracuse Center for European Studies reaches out to colleges and universities in
upstate New York, public servants at the state and national level, business
groups, media, primary and secondary school educators, and the general public
to advance a new vision of Europe that corresponds to new realities on the continent.
We build networks of university students and faculty in upstate New York in part
through a Regional Seminar Series that is open to the public. We regularly
invite scholars from neighboring institutions to speak at these seminars, as
well as an international group of practitioners and scholars of European affairs.
We also encourage our speakers to reach out to the upstate New York community through
media appearances in conjunction with their talks.
Syracuse Center for European Studies is a proud sponsor of
the Syracuse International Film Festival,
a singular cultural event that brings hundreds of international and European films
to Syracuse each spring. To enrich the festival experience, we help to sponsor European
film directors' travel to the festival and arrange talks and events at different venues
in Syracuse. We also sponsor a prize for the best European film at the festival.
We seek to enhance public debate of European issues in the US by encouraging
faculty members to contribute opinion pieces to leading newspapers, and by helping
media organizations to identify Syracuse University faculty to interview on
particular topics. We organize seminars for public officials and businesspeople on
critical topics in European affairs and transatlantic relations.
Finally, Syracuse Center for European Studies helps to enrich K-12 education in
New York State and nationally by working with
Syracuse University Project Advance
and the New York State Council for
Social Studies to provide training for teachers on contemporary European studies.
