Coming Soon !! The 18th Symposium on Development and Social Transformation
-- See the
program for more information.
The Development and Social Transformation Forum
promotes dialogue and scholarly inquiry concerning economic, political, social
and cultural change in developing and transitioning countries. Participating
faculty and graduate students have a wide range of interests, including economic
reform, democratization and globalization.
Other specific interests have included government reform in Cambodia,
efforts to reduce maternal death in childbirth in Indonesia, natural resource
management in Ethiopia, sustainable peace and reconstruction in Angola, the sex
trade in the Caribbean, indigenous
peoples' social movements in
in Bolivia and conflict management among pastoralist communities in
Kenya.
Forum activities include:
- A public research symposium
concerning policy issues in developing and transition countries. Maxwell
graduate students from 50 countries have presented over 500 research papers at
twelve symposia since 1999.
- A peer-reviewed journal, entitled The Journal of Development and Social Transformation.
The journal publishes the best papers from these symposia and other worthy
papers, research or field notes, and commentary submitted by students, faculty
and practitioners. It provides an outlet for promising work of soon-to-be junior
scholars and practitioners while connecting that with advances and notes from
the field, opening-up dialogue between scholars and practitioners. Core themes
include: multi-level governance, transnational advocacy, international policy,
accountability, grassroots involvement, sustainable development, disaster
relief, environment, and poverty alleviation in the developing world and
countries in transition. The journal also aims to cover other key topics related
to regional and country-level specific issues, as well as local-global and
domestic-international political issues. it also seeks insights on the impact of
specific approaches and practices for instance, micro-credit programs or
rights-based approach to advocacy and development. the journal's reviewers and
commentators contribute to a vibrant community of practitioners, academics and
graduate students.
- A speaker series that provides an opportunity for faculty, advanced Ph.D. students and experts from outside the university to present research on developing and transition countries. We have three to five speakers per semester.
