Homophobia Where There Are No Gays:
A Nigerian Mystery
Speaker:
Rudi Gaudio, Anthropology, SUNY-Purchase
Summary:
Recently the Nigerian public sphere has become increasingly antigay (with
politicians condemning homosexuality, outlawing same-sex marriage, etc.)
even though there is no significant gay-rights movement in the country.
Understanding this new homophobia leads us to a consideration of the
ethnic/regional/religious divisions within Nigeria and the ways that these
reflect and refract global tensions (e.g., discourses of "[Western]
modernity versus [African/Islamic] tradition).
