Susan Wadley is Professor of Anthropology at the Maxwell School. Her research interests include oral traditions and folklore, women's status issues, and social change in rural India. Recently, she has studied gender and performance issues concerning the north Indian epic called Dhola, and she has also studied female neglect and the mortality of women and female children in rural India. As a cultural anthropologist, my primary interests are in medical anthropology, gender, development, and nationalism in South Asia, especially India. My past research has focused on women’s reproductive health and rituals during childbirth and my current research explores the impact of HIV/AIDS in India.
