Through the Goekjian Summer Research Grant program, the Moynihan Institute provides research support and mentoring to doctoral students in the Maxwell School who are interested in international and global issues in a multidisciplinary and applied melieu. Doctoral students in the program receive summer research grants and participate in a yearlong bi-weekly workshop in which they receive guidance on research methodology and share their work with one another. In addition to encouraging doctoral research that has a global perspective, the program aims to buttress the professional preparation of student researchers, especially those with policy- relevant themes. Such sharing of research problems and experiences will leaven the disciplinary global affairs research of Maxwell graduate students with insights from other disciplines.

Participants in the Goekjian Summer Research workshops are expected to develop and refine a research portfolio that might include, in addition to research papers, statements concerning the roots, relevance, importance, and connectedness among a student’s various research endeavors, as well as the student's underlying research interests and methods and anticipated future research projects. These portfolios enrich the students' vitae as they begin their careers. The workshops are designed by the program coordinator with the help of a committee of former workshop participants. Thus, a research network is formed among graduate students across disciplinary trees.
