WELCOME
¡Bienvenidos! ¡Bem vindos! Hello, and welcome to the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA)! PLACA is a vibrant part of the Maxwell School’s Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs, and provides a scholarly and cultural home for students, faculty, and community members who share a common interest in Latin America and the Caribbean. PLACA serves as a point of contact between the Syracuse University community and scholars, activists, and others from the region. I invite you to view our website and take advantage of the many opportunities to become involved in PLACA. -- Tom Perreault, PLACA Director and Associate Professor of Geography MISSION PLACA’s mission is to promote excellence in multi-disciplinary scholarship focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, and to connect the Syracuse University community with students, scholars, artists, writers and activists from the region. About PLACA Located within the Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs in the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, the Program on Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA) is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary center for scholarship and cultural exchange. PLACA brings together faculty members and graduate students from across Syracuse University and the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) who share scholarly and cultural interests in Latin America and the Caribbean. PLACA provides students, faculty, and community members a wide variety of scholarly and cultural opportunities, including a yearly graduate seminar, funding for summer research, a speaker series, a film series (‘Cinelatte’), a brownbag research talk series, graduate student working groups, and the ‘Spanish Table’ for those wanting to practice their language skills. More than anything else, PLACA is a center for graduate student training, research, and involvement. Most of our programs are run by and for students, and we welcome involvement from students across the Syracuse-ESF community and beyond. In recent years, our graduate students have received funding to conduct field research in Brazil, Chile, Dominica, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. In addition, PLACA provides graduate students the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Latin America and the Caribbean.
