The notion of the child-god, particularly popular in Indian poster art, owes much to pictorial representations of Krishna, whose various exploits as an infant and child are celebrated in the popular Vaishnava texts, the Harivamsa and the Bhagavata Purana. He was especially fond of stealing butter.
