Minor
in South Asia Studies
The South Asia
Program is an interdisciplinary effort that focuses on the
cultures, politics, history, arts, and current events of
South Asia (the nations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). The
Center offers the North Indian and Pakistani language
Hindi-Urdu and the South Indian language Tamil. Located in
the Global Affairs Institute, the South Asia Center is a
National Resource Center for South Asia, funded by the U. S.
Department of Education, in a consortium with Cornell
University. The Center coordinates a variety of colloquia,
film series, lectures, and cultural events for all members
of the Syracuse University community as well as faculty and
students at nearby colleges.
The
minor in South Asian studies provides an understanding of
the religious, historical, economic, political, and artistic
dimensions of the nations of South Asia. In consultation
with the program director, students may plan the minor according
to their individual interests.
The
minor requires 18 credits, 12 of which are in courses numbered
300 or above. While not required, we urge students to take
at least one, if not more, courses in Hindi-Urdu (HIN101,
102, 201, 202) or Tamil (TAM 101, 102, 201, 202).
