University
Summary:
Professor Hansen's interests have been in the intersection
between political and legal anthropology, and the
anthropology of religion. He has done fieldwork in
Western India and in formerly Indian townships in South
Africa. Currently, he is working on a book exploring
religious revival, cultural identities, music, and anxious
political imaginaries in post-apartheid South Africa, as
seen from the point of view of a formerly Indian township
outside Durban. Professor Hansen's publications
include The Saffron Wave: Democracy and Hindu Nationalism
in Modern India (1999) and Wages of Violence
(2001).
