Title:
Cartographies of anOther Asia
and its Other Global City
Where
& When: November
3, 2009
341 Eggers Hall
12:30 pm
Type
of Activity: Speaker
Speaking: Shail
Mayaram, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi
Summary:
The illustrated talk will draw upon Mayaram’s book, The
Other Global City (Routledge, 2009). She argues that
thinking about the city in the longue duree and as part of a
topography of interconnected regions contests dominant
cartographies. These include both statist and nationalist
ways of reading cities that have occasioned the many and
particularly violent territorial partitions in Asia. She
also interrogates the “global cities” literature that views
the city as a shimmering “global network” as also clones of
the clash of civilization argument that has produced the
idea of a homogenous Islam.
