Foreign
Language And Area Studies Fellowship Program
The
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Program
assists students in pursuing training in order to acquire a
high level of competence in one or more languages critical
to national needs of the United States, and a fuller
understanding of the areas, regions, or countries in which
that language is commonly used.
SOUTH
ASIA:
Academic year FLAS fellowships at Syracuse University
are awarded for:
Hindi-Urdu, Tamil, Bengali (from Cornell)
Summer
FLAS Fellowships from Syracuse may be used toward a full
summer of study in intensive language training programs in
the United States or abroad for any South Asian language
approved by the South Asia Center.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
An applicant must
1. Be
a citizen or permanent resident of the United
States;
2.
Have earned a baccalaureate or comparable degree before the
fellowship begins;
3.
Shows potential for high academic achievement based on such
indicators such as grade point average, class ranking, or
similar measures that the institution may determine;
4. Be accepted for, or
enrolled in, graduate level course work in a program that
combines modern foreign language training with a focus on international
or area studies either in an academic discipline or a
professional program.
5. Agree to pursue full-time study in accordance with the
university's requirements during the entire award period,
and agree to study language and area studies during the
tenure of the award
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS
Academic Year 2008-2009 - March 07, 2008
Summer 2008 - February 19, 2008.
AWARD PROVISIONS AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS OF FELLOWS
1.
Academic Year FLAS
fellowships for 2008-09 are expected to provide a stipend
of approximately $15,000 and up to 24 credit hours of
tuition coverage shared by the South Asia Center and the
Graduate School.
2.
Summer FLAS Fellowships for 2008 may provide up to $ 4000
for tuition with an additional $ 2500 stipend.
3.FLAS
Fellows must register for a minimum of one course per term
in approved language instruction at the appropriate level;
take related area studies courses; be engaged in approved
dissertation research; or (in the case of Summer FLAS) be
enrolled in an approved language program overseas. Approved
activities must be maintained for the duration of the
recipients fellowship tenure.
4. All
Fellows must inform the institution of any change in their programs of study or
academic status.
5. All Fellows must submit to the U.S. Secretary of
Education, through the on-line reporting system, a final
report at the end of their fellowship tenure.
These fellowships provide graduate students from
throughout the university with the opportunity to add
in-depth training in a South Asian Language to their
disciplinary training. Summer applications are due by
February 15, 2008; Academic Year applications for 08-09 are
due by March 07.
