Chinese officials are scrambling scramble to contain a growing COVID-19 outbreak, imposing lockdowns and restrictions that are adding chaos to global supply chains and igniting concern about another major shock to a global economy already reeling from high inflation. “You know that China is going to do everything it can to get this under control. The question is what’s stronger, the Chinese government or the virus,” Professor Mary Lovely tells the New York Times, adding, “We know that Omicron is quite a formidable opponent.”

Lovely was also quoted in the Voice of America article, "New COVID Lockdowns in China Spark Fears of Economic Disruption." "The lockdown in Guangdong Province and Shenzhen is, I think, the most worrisome because it is [China’s] largest exporting province," says Lovely. "It's a powerhouse, especially in electronics."
