The race for New York’s newly redistricted 22nd Congressional District is wide open, which means the Aug. 23 primaries could be quite competitive.

Currently, NY-22 is represented by conservative Republican Claudia Tenney. But the newly re-drawn 22nd District is so different Tenney opted to run in NY-24 instead. It excludes most of the conservative Southern Tier, and instead expands west into more Democratic Onondaga County, and will include Syracuse.

The new district leans democratic, says Grant Reeher, director of the Campbell Public Affairs Institute and professor of political science. “But that doesn’t mean that a Republican couldn’t win if it’s the right kind of Republican and if that Republican is running against the right kind of Democrat,” he says. “Given that it’s an open seat, I think it’s genuinely winnable by either party.”
