The Fiscal "Wake-Up" Tour

The
Fiscal Wake-Up Tour is a public-engagement initiative sponsored by the Concord
Coalition (a nonpartisan grassroots organization), the Brookings Institution,
and the Heritage Foundation. The Tour is designed to educate and focus attention
on the nation’s daunting long-term fiscal challenges. Speakers at Maxwell
included David Walker, comptroller general of the United States; Robert Bixby,
executive director of the Concord Coalition; Isabel Sawhill, director of
economic studies, the Brookings Institution; Alison Fraser, director, Thomas A
Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies, the Heritage Foundation; and John L.
Palmer, public trustee for the Social Security and Medicare programs and dean

Mann
is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the
Brookings Institution. He is former executive director of the American Political
Science Association. He is co-author of The Broken Branch: How Congress is
Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track (Oxford University Press,
2006). He
spoke in the School's State of Democracy Speaker Series. His topic was "Will the
November Elections Help Mend the Broken Branch?"
Lecture by Former U.N. Representative John Bolton

Bolton
was appointed by President Bush as U.S. Permanent Representative to the United
Nations on August 1, 2005, and served until his resignation in December 2006.
During his tenure at the United Nations, Bolton was a tenacious and outspoken
advocate of U.S. efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, push
Syria out of Lebanon, and bring African peacekeepers into shaky Somalia. Bolton
currently is a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. His topic at
Maxwell was “U.N. Reform and U.S. Priorities.”
Ceremony and Symposia Mark Launch of Moynihan Institute

On March 15, the Maxwell
School celebrated the naming of the
Daniel Patrick Moynihan Institute
of Global Affairs to honor and continue the legacy of the former U.S.
Senator. Events included in the day was a dedication ceremony and ribbon
cutting, and a series of four symposia on topics of special interest to the
Senator. These events are available for online viewing.

"The Academy’s Role in
Community Development" served as one of SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s inaugural
year activities, and was part of a multi-year initiative by Maxwell CNY Alumni to
catalyze community discussion and foster creation of new and deeper
relationships between local individuals and agencies. Dean Mitchel Wallerstein moderated. Other participants
were Charles Beirne, president, LeMoyne
College; Nancy Cantor, chancellor, Syracuse University; Gregory Eastwood M.D.,
president, SUNY Upstate Medical University; Cornelius Murphy, president, SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry; and Debbie Sydow, president,
Onondaga Community College.
E.J. Dionne on the Presidential Election and National Politics

On
hand as part of the State of Democracy lecture series, Washington Post
journalist and Brookings Institute Fellow E.J. Dionne entertained questions from
the audience and from Maxwell political scientist Rogan Kersh. Topics included
analyses of the recent Presidential election and the prospects for
re-empowerment of the Democratic Party.
Election Wrap-Up and Analysis: Michael Lewan and Frank Donatelli

Two long-time Washington
insiders representing both sides of the political aisle, Michael Lewan and Frank
Donatelli, provide an insightful analysis and wrap-up of the 2004 election.
Mr. Lewan is a democratic
strategist who has managed eight successful political campaigns and plays an
important role in the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the New
Democrat Network. He is former Chief of Staff to Senator Joseph Lieberman and
Congressman Stephen Solarz and a frequent political commentator on CNN, MSNBC,
Fox News, and other media outlets. Currently, Mr. Lewan is a principal with
Brown Rudnick in Washington, DC, providing legislative representation for range
of Fortune 500 companies and trade associations.
Mr. Donatelli is a long-time
activist in Republican and conservative causes. He served President Ronald
Reagan as an assistant for political and intergovernmental affairs and as deputy
assistant for public liaison at the White House. He also served as a senior
advisor to Senator Robert Dole and to White House Chief of Staff James Baker.
Mr. Donatelli has appeared on numerous public affairs programs on MSNBC, Fox
News, and CNN. Currently, Mr. Donatelli is executive vice president and
director of federal government relations for McGuireWoods Consulting, and he is
Chairman of the Reagan Ranch Board of Governors of Young America's Foundation.
Global Policies Lecture Series: Robert L. Barry

Title: "Elections and Illiberal Democracies:
The Past and the Future"
Robert Barry is a consultant on election
issues, and formerly headed observation missions to Serbia, Armenia, Albania,
and the Russian Federation on behalf of the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe. As head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina in
1998-2001, he was responsible for civilian implementation of the Dayton Peace
agreement and the administration of five elections. Prior to his
retirement from the US Foreign Service, he was U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia (1992-1995). From 1990 to 1992, Ambassador Barry set up and coordinated U.S.
assistance programs for Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union
designed to promote the transition to market economies and democracy.

Lewis, of the Center for Public Integrity, spoke on the topic of his book,
The Buying of the President 2004, Who's Really Bankrolling Bush and his
Democratic Challengers and What They Expect in Return. His appearance was
sponsored by Maxwell's Campbell Public Affairs Institute.
Jeffrey Rosen Gives State
of Democracy Lecture.

Jeffrey Rosen, legal affairs editor of
The New Republic and author of the
book The Naked Crowd: Reclaiming Security and Freedom in an Anxious Age,
teaches constitutional law, criminal procedure, and the law of
privacy. He is also a frequent contributor to The New York
Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and National Public
Radio. The New York Times called his book, The Unwanted
Gaze: The Destruction of Privacy in America (2000), “the
definitive text on privacy perils in the digital age.”
Ambassador Nicholas Platt Speaks on Chinese-American Relations
Wednesday, March 17, Eggers Hall
Ambassador Nicholas Platt assessed the current state of relations between the
two countries and prospects for the future of Chinese and American goals and interests.
Platt was U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines from 1987-1991 and Pakistan from
1991-1992. In 1972, he accompanied President Nixon on the
historic trip to Beijing
that signaled the resumption of relations between the U.S. and China. He was one
of the first members of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing when the U.S. established
a mission there in 1973. In all, Platt spent more than 30 years as an American
diplomat in Asia. Since 1992, he has served as president of the Asia Society.
Paul Volker speaks on
personnel crisis in federal government

Paul A. Volcker, former chairman
of the Federal Reserve and chairman of
the National Commission on Public Service, led a panel discussion on the
looming personnel crisis in federal government. The discussion focused
on the “graying” of the federal workforce, challenges in hiring and
retention, and other factors threatening the future of public service.

Kevin Phillips, a
respected political analyst and author, lectured on his recent
bestselling book, "Wealth and Democracy: A Political
History of the American Rich." Following his lecture,
Phillips participated in a panel discussion with two members of
the Maxwell faculty.
NASA head outlines
agency's future
In
his first major policy address since being sworn in as NASA
Administrator in late 2001, Sean
O'Keefe outlined the future direction of the space agency at the
Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
Colombian
Ambassador to U.S.

Luis
Alberto Moreno, the Colombian Ambassador to the United States,
spoke about "Colombia at the Crossroads" on March 19
at 4 p.m.. The
ambassador discussed drugs, terrorism, and the outlook for peace
in Colombia.
