Syracuse University's Center for European
Studies announces its FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowship
Competition for Summer 2008 and Academic Year 2008-09.
We request proposals from qualified graduate students who wish to enhance their
knowledge of a European language to complement their current program of study.
Summer Fellowships - Deadline: February 15, 2008
Summer 2008 Fellowships provide up to $4,000 for tuition and a $2,500 living
stipend for intensive (6 or 8 weeks) study abroad
at the intermediate or advanced level in any
European language or at a qualifying US summer school (Middlebury or the like)
for beginning language training.
Summer Fellowships are also available to qualifying students from other
universities.
Academic Year 2008-09 Fellowships - Deadline: March 7, 2008
Academic Year 2008 Fellowships provide 24 credits of tuition and a $15,000
stipend and require students to study a two-course sequence in one of the
European languages offered at SU, with a preference for less commonly taught
languages such as Polish, Portuguese, and Turkish.
Proposals for dissertation writing that advance language and area studies
training will also be considered but subject to special approval restrictions.
Only US citizens and permanent residents who are full time graduate students are
eligible.

knowledge of a South Asian language (normally Hindi or Tamil) to complement
their current program of study.

at institutions in the USA or abroad in the languages offered at Syracuse
University. Summer Fellowships are
also available to qualifying student at other universities.

Academic Year 2008 Fellowships provide up to 24 credits of tuition and a $15,000
stipend and require students to study a South Asian language that is offered at
SU (normally Hindi or Tamil) or available through our consortium with Cornell
(Bengali).
Only US citizens and permanent residents who are full time graduate students are
eligible.
