IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL ADMITTED MPA STUDENTS

REGARDING FILING THE FAFSA (Application for Federal Student Aid):

Syracuse University’s Office of Financial Aid has notified the Department of Public Administration that all students intending to matriculate into the MPA Program on June 30, 2008 MUST FILE BOTH:

·         2007-2008 FAFSA* (see below for exceptions)

·         2008-2009 FAFSA

BOTH the 2007-08 and 2008-09 FAFSA forms MUST be filed PRIOR TO April 1

WHY?

Even though the dates of attendance covered by the 2008-09 FAFSA are July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009, if you only file this form, SU’s Office of Financial Aid will not be able to process your loans for disbursement in time for your matriculation in July 2008.  Thus, summer loans may be delayed until Fall.

The only way in which a student can guarantee the availability of federal loans for Summer 2008 is to file last year’s FAFSA (the 2007-2008 form).

All students must file the 2008-09 FAFSA for federal loan eligibility and disbursement for Fall 2008, Spring 2009 and Summer 2009.

What if I filed a 2007-08 FAFSA already for my current institution?*

  • If you filed a 2007-08 FAFSA for your current undergraduate studies, YOU NEED TO UPDATE the 2007-08 FAFSA noting that you will be a new GRADUATE student beginning in Summer 2008. Graduate students are not considered Dependents for federal loan eligibility.  Your parent’s income/tax information is not considered.

  • If you filed a 2007-08 FAFSA as a current Graduate student at a college/university other than SU, you will simply need to re-enter your filed form and ADD SU as an institution you will be attending in Summer 2008.

  • If you filed a 2007-08 FAFSA as a current Graduate student AT SU – you DO NOT need to refile this form for the MPA program and only need to submit the new 2008-09 FAFSA application.

All US citizens are encouraged to file the FAFSA.  You may do so on-line at “FAFSA on the Web” at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Please address any questions about your FAFSA applications to Cynthia Roach, SU Office of Financial Aid, at finmail@syr.edu. Please identify yourself as an incoming MPA student for the Summer 2008 term.
