Financial Assistance
Department Assistantships
Anyone admitted to the Ph.D. Program and not funded by outside sources (e.g., a national or international fellowship, or support provided by a governmental or other employer) will be awarded a graduate assistantship for one year that will be renewed for two additional years if the student remains in good standing. Graduate assistants work with faculty on research projects and course-related activities. An annual stipend of $18,000 is awarded in addition to a 24 credit-hour tuition scholarship.
Fellowships Gerald B. Cramer Doctoral Fellowship in Aging
Applications are sought for the Gerald B. Cramer Graduate Fellowship in Aging, which will be awarded to a doctoral student in Public Administration at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Support is available for a period of three to four years, and will cover all tuition costs as well as provide an annual stipend. Awardees will be mentored by, and engage in collaborative research with, Dr. Douglas A. Wolf, who is the Gerald B. Cramer Professor of Aging Studies in the Maxwell School.
Dissertation Fellowships
The Department of Public Administration offers two dissertation fellowships to students in their fourth year. These fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis depending on the strength of the application. Ph.D. students are strongly encouraged to apply for external dissertation fellowships. A list of potential fellowships is available and students are encouraged to work with their faculty mentor to identify potential fellowships.
Summer Funding
While the Department of Public Administration does not guarantee summer funding for incoming Ph.D. students, several funding opportunities are available. Each year, the department offers several small summer grants that are available on a competitive basis. In addition, Teaching Assistant positions are available for core MPA courses that are offered during the summer, including Public Administration and Democracy, Executive Leadership, and Public Budgeting. Students may also receive opportunities for summer funding through grants awarded to faculty members.
