The Public Affairs Program has been working closely with the Syracuse Boys and Clubs for the past three years on several fronts.
First, students from PAF 110 provide computer tutoring at the East Fayette branch.
Second, policy studies majors have developed and maintained a program for collecting and analyzing data. Some of our undergraduates supervise teens at the center to enter the data. They also provide quality checks on the information entered through an Access database. This experience is similar to what consulting companies do and provides great preparation for jobs once they graduate.
Third, several policy studies majors who are also public relations majors in Newhouse work with the fundraising arm of the Clubs to write grant proposals, create press releases and implement fundraising events, such as the annual auction. Students are sometimes hired by the Boys and Girls Club after working in courses and as volunteers under a work-study grant. All students who put in 450 hours a year are eligible for an education grant from Americorp that can be used to pay college costs.
