PAF410 is offered to students in their Junior or Senior year majoring in Policy Studies at Syracuse University. There are 2 sections for consideration. Permission is required from Professor Coplin or Michelle Walker.

PAF410.1: Practicum in Public Policy: Government and Non-Profit Agencies

This course is designed to study, observe and actively participate in public policy processes. The course will focus on a semester long internship (minimum 90 hours), 5 class meetings and assignments as outlined in the course syllabus.

The course will give students the opportunity for a work experience in a government or non-profit organization and will help the student gain an understanding of public policy processes as they relate to the governments and non-profit sector. A special emphasis will be on the financial relationship that exists between the public and not for profit sectors. Additionally, students will gain valuable insight as to their own career growth and development.

Class meetings will concentrate on 2 main areas. Instruction will cover various aspects of public policy implementation in the executive and legislative branches of state and local government. Special emphasis will be on the role and tactics of the government lobbyist.

PAF410.2: Practicum in Public Policy: Benchmarking

This course is offered through the Community Benchmarks Program (CBP). The mission of the program is "To help government and nonprofit organizations set measurable goals (i.e., benchmarks) to improve their performance and accountability."

Each semester, student enrolled in the course provide analysis of various government and nonprofit services. Students work in teams to complete the study. A copy of all published CBP reports can be found at the website: www.maxwell.syr.edu/benchmarks.
