The Health Careers Institute Collaboration

BY Jay Kiedrowski and Allison Rojas
University of Minnesota

Summary

This case concerns informal cross-sector collaborations involving business, governmental, philanthropic, educational, and nonprofit organizations.  These groups came together to combat a neighborhood's deterioration.  The case focuses on the development and evolution of the Phillips Partnership's Health Careers Institute as well as the East Metro Health Career Institute in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.  One network was successful, the other was not.  This case forces readers to think critically about the factors that stimulate collaborative networks, the type of leadership that is needed in networks, and the challenge of sustaining networks.
