Current Research Projects:
I am currently working on two research projects.
A Europe of Regions? Regional Integration, Sub-State
Nationalism and the Optimal Size of States investigates
whether European integration increases sub-state nationalist mobilization within
European Union member states. In this research project, I explore the strategies
and electoral success of sub-state nationalist political parties in Western
Europe. Extending the literature on sub-state nationalist political parties,
multi-level governance and the optimal size of nations, I argue that deeper
European political and economic integration increases support for sub-state
nationalist parties because it increases the viability of independent small
states within the European Union.
The second project investigates the causes of xenophobia in western Europe. In
particular, how does the presence of immigrants or minorities in a local
community affect the attitudes towards these groups?
