My name is Emily Knight and I am a senior studying public policy and political science. I am a first-generation college student from a small town in Missouri and am interning for Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) this semester.
Coming into the Maxwell in Washington Program I knew I wanted hands-on experience in the public sector to really get a feel for what it would be like to work in this environment, in comparison to just studying it. My experience on Capitol Hill has been a challenging and enlightening experience. Given our current political climate, there have been some obvious obstacles working in the minority party, but I have gained a solid understanding of how policy and politics works on the Hill. This opportunity has taught me a lot about myself and what I want to do moving forward after graduation.
Participating in this program is an invaluable experience if you are considering a job in DC, no matter the sector. You have a huge access to not only a network of Syracuse Alumni, but a wide range of professionals across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Living in DC puts you in one of the most powerful environments in the world and I cannot wait continue my experience here after graduation.
